Take care of yourself

Parenting is so much easier when you make time for yourself. It’s about getting the balance right.

Of course, raising a child with a disability is a time-consuming job, especially if you need to juggle tasks like feeding, dressing and medical appointments. It can seem to take over your whole life. But you have to look after your own needs too.

So make sure you get support from friends or family, or respite services if you need them. Do something you enjoy that doesn’t involve the kids. Maybe even spend a little time alone! And try to work as a team with your partner, if you can.

Look after yourself and you’ll feel more patient and calm when your child needs you. And you’ll feel better about being a mum or dad.
